The Solar Impulse group has given pilot André Borschberg the thumbs up to take off through the night. The team on the land has been carefully observing the aircraft’s batteries and power practice throughout the day in Switzerland.
As the sun set above the mountains, the choice was made that the airplane would stay in the air and continue flying through the dark of night. During the day the flight has gone according to plan with presently a bit more wind than predictable. However the wind wasn’t all bad news, at one end the solar-powered electric plane attained a top speed of 71 miles per hour thanks to a tailwind.
Following 14 hours of flying, Borschberg shut down the solar power makers and as an alternative will rely on a gentle descent and battery power to keep flying. With no autopilot on board, it will be up to the human pilot to stay the aircraft flying.
By means of the batteries completely charged, Borschberg is anticipated to touchdown back at the home airfield in Payerne, Switzerland, at sunrise on Thursday morning local time.
