Trials planned for Aussie malaria vaccine, stage 1 human trials on an Australian vaccine that researchers hope will protect against all strains of malaria are expected to begin in the next 12 months.Called PlasProtecT, the new malaria vaccine was exposed at Griffith University on Queensland’s Gold Coast last Friday.
The vaccine is the result of decades of work by a team led by Professor Michael Good (pictured), one of Australia’s leading scientists. Professor Good said that, “our approach has entailed putting the malaria parasite to sleep by using a new class of chemical compounds that target certain DNA sequences in the parasite.
“We have observed very strong immune responses that can protect from multiple strains and species of parasite, potentially overcoming the major hurdle to developing a vaccine.”
